One of my favorite smoothies is the mango smoothie. I started making them after being disappointed at the lack of freshness in smoothies purchased from local shops. Tropical fruits are so sweet, vibrant and tasty. The most common mango is the red/green, red/yellow oval mango. It can be found at any local grocery store and is usually imported from India, Brazil or Mexico. When making this smoothie, I always look for Haitian mangos at Whole Foods. These mangos are lime green and have a flat oval shape. They also have a depth of flavor not found in other mangos. There is an underlying rich buttery note. You cannot find these mangos year round, but when you do, it’s a real treat.

Tip:

  • The quality of your blender makes a difference when blending smoothies because of the ice. You will want your smoothie to be well blended without chunks of ice getting caught in your straw. I recommend a Breville or Vitamix blender, especially if you make smoothies frequently.
  • For the perfect smoothie experience, use a fat straw. These straws can be ordered from the internet
  • To make a creamier smoothie, substitute the ice and regular banana with two frozen bananas. Just make sure you peel the bananas before placing them in the freezer.
